Start with the skills that will make the biggest difference.

Start with an honest skills check

GED maths preparation is easier to organise when you know exactly where you get stuck. Perhaps you can calculate a percentage but struggle to turn a word problem into an equation. Or you understand a graph until the question asks you to explain what its slope represents. For students preparing in Kuala Lumpur, checking these skills first can make lessons and independent study more purposeful.

If you are searching for GED Classes Near Me, bring the results of this checklist to your first conversation. They can help you and your tutor choose the best place to begin.

A useful starting point, not a score prediction. Show every step, then review the method behind each answer. This short checklist cannot predict an official GED score.

Your GED maths readiness checklist

The official GED subject overview includes basic mathematics, geometry, algebra, graphs and functions. Use these areas to organise revision instead of choosing worksheets at random. Review the official GED subject overview.

Work through a few questions without looking at solutions. Beside each answer, record whether you completed it independently, needed a reminder or did not know how to begin. A correct answer with several hints still identifies a topic worth revisiting.

  1. Number senseConvert fractions, decimals and percentages into comparable forms.
  2. Signed numbersWork accurately with positive and negative numbers.
  3. AlgebraSolve equations and explain what an unknown quantity represents.
  4. GeometryDistinguish area from perimeter and include the correct units.
  5. Graphs and dataRead coordinates, scales and changes in a graph or table.
  6. ReasonablenessCheck whether a calculated answer makes sense in context.

Try these six original practice questions

Write your working before reading the answers. The ringgit examples make the arithmetic familiar; they do not suggest that official GED questions use Malaysian currency or actual local delivery prices.

Question 01 · Fractions

Calculate: ¾ + ⅔

Question 02 · Percentage

A bag costs RM160 and is discounted by 15%. What is the sale price?

Question 03 · Algebra

Solve: 4x + 7 = 31

Question 04 · Geometry

A room is 6 m by 4 m. Find its area and perimeter. Which measurement is useful for flooring?

Question 05 · Graphs

A line passes through (1, 5) and (3, 11). What is its slope?

Question 06 · Expressions

A delivery charge is 5 + 2d. What is the charge when d = 7 km?

These questions were created for this guide. They are not official GED items and do not cover the full syllabus.

Worked answers: check the method, not only the result

Question 1: Fractions

Use a common denominator of 12: ¾ = 9/12 and ⅔ = 8/12. So 9/12 + 8/12 = 17/12, or 1 5/12. Adding the denominators directly is a sign that equivalent fractions need more practice.

Question 2: Percentage discount

The discount is 0.15 × 160 = RM24, so the sale price is RM136. If you wrote RM24 as the final answer, the arithmetic was correct but you answered a different question. Underline the quantity you have been asked to find.

Question 3: Algebra

Subtract 7 from both sides to get 4x = 24. Divide by 4 to obtain x = 6. Substitute 6 into the original equation to check it: 24 + 7 = 31.

Question 4: Geometry

The room has an area of 24 square metres and a perimeter of 20 metres. Flooring relates to area; the distance around the boundary relates to perimeter. Those meanings help you choose the calculation.

Question 5: Slope

The slope is (11 − 5) ÷ (3 − 1) = 3. Divide the change in the vertical coordinate by the change in the horizontal coordinate, keeping the order consistent.

Question 6: An expression in context

The delivery expression is 5 + 2d. At 7 km, the charge is RM19. The fixed RM5 is added once; it is not multiplied by the distance.

Turn the result into a focused revision plan

Choose the earliest missing skill in a calculation. If fractions prevent you from rearranging an equation, review fractions before attempting harder algebra. Practise several variations, then return to one later without checking your notes first.

Keep an error log with the question, your original method, the corrected method and a short explanation. “I used the discount instead of the final price” is more useful than “careless mistake” because it tells you what to watch for next time.

Build confidence in three steps

Once individual topics feel more secure, mix them together. A mixed set checks whether you can recognise the method yourself. Gradually introduce timed practice after you can explain your working accurately.

1. Identify

Mark each question independently solved, solved with a hint, or not started.

2. Repair

Review the earliest skill gap, then practise several new variations.

3. Re-test

Return to the topic later without notes, then mix it with other question types.

GED maths preparation: common questions

Does this checklist tell me if I am ready for the GED maths test?

No. It is a starting check. The official GED Ready practice test provides a more relevant readiness measure. GED Testing Service also explains the role of its mathematics study guide and practice test in its official maths guidance.

Do I need to memorise every maths formula?

The GED provides a formula sheet, but you still need to recognise which formula applies and substitute values correctly. Practise with official resources so the format is familiar.

What should I do when I do not understand a word problem?

Rewrite the problem in a short sentence, identify the unknown and list the quantities. Ask your tutor to check your interpretation before checking the calculation.
